Advice for Jobseekers

In the current economic situation, when every week seems to bring a new drama and every day a story of job cuts, none of us can feel completely secure. But for anyone who is unlucky enough to become a victim of the recession, one of the Channel Islands' most experienced recruiters, Gina Le Prevost, chief executive of AP Group, has a list of things to do - and not to do.
-
Don't panic. Take a methodical approach and try to stay positive.
-
Start looking for a new position immediately. Don't allow yourself to fall into a not-working pattern and attitude.
-
Treat it like a job. Your new (and temporary) task is to find yourself something else - so be disciplined and work hard at it.
-
Network. Let your friends and contacts know what's happened and what you're looking for. They will want to help.
-
Stay in the loop. Keep up to date with news and trends in your industry.
-
Use your resources. Professional organisations of which you are a member will know what is going on and what possibilities may be coming up for you.
-
Be flexible (a). It is easier to find the right position when you have something already. If you can get a bit of stability back quickly, even if it's not the salary and job title you really want, you'll be better placed to find the ideal job.
-
Be flexible (b). You might have to work further from home or even relocate. Try to think of it as a new chapter that could turn out to be a good thing.
-
Don't seem desperate. Don't let a prospective employer know how much you need that job. Be enthusiastic, of course, but make it look as though you're interested for the right reasons.
-
Stay in good shape. Keep fit, eat and drink well and get plenty of sleep - don't let yourself go.
